AI: CASSIE YUAN// AEON NEUE FASHION
The first time I laid my eyes on Cassie was during crunch time at Eco Fashion Week 2016. She had been cast to walk the runway and stepped in for a no-show, which saved our runway line up. This is the essence of Cassie Yuan. Her beauty is more than meets the eye, a designer student by calling and a runway model to embrace her long time love to all that is fashion. I’ve asked Cassie to join me for an evening of conversation about her upcoming debut at Aeon Neue Fashion, her experience as a designer student launching her own line XIAO TONG and to dish about her time as a model.
Cassie Yuan has been a student at Art Institute of Seattle for 2.5 years now and is heading towards graduation. In the midst of her designing school career she became involved in the modeling industry.
“ Modeling was just something I really wanted to do along the way, I applied and got involved.”
I’ve asked Cassie to tell us more about her graduating class and all she has learned during her time at Art Institute of Seattle.
What lead you to want to become a designer?
“A designer is something I wanted to be since I was little.”
Throughout your time at Art Institute of Seattle, what would you say is the number one thing you have gained from being a student there?
“I believe it is the foundation of sewing and constructing, I think those are the basic skills that are very important and to set up a foundation. And I believe you can only transfer the ideas to reality if you really understand the constructions part of it.”
Right off the bat I wanted to know the cause of Cassie’s fashion aspirations and what lead her to choose the Art Institute of Seattle.
Cassie, share a story with us about your first encounter with fashion.
“I still remember I was about 4 or 5 years old and everytime my mom invited her girlfriends to come over, I would be playing dress up. Putting things on myself and I would do a runway show. It now all makes sense of why I wanted to model and design.”
I’ve got to say Cassie, you are a phenomenal model and I’d like to know how your modeling background has influenced you as a designer?
“Due to having a modeling background I think it helped me understand better how this industry works, like the backstage. It really requires a really big group of people in different areas to make the show happen.”
If you were to give advice to youth who are interested in fashion and thinking about going into designing school what would it be?
“To understand that fashion is not all about glam and on stage it actually requires a lot of hard work. You have to truly commit to it and really work on it, and another thing is you have to just follow your heart and believe in yourself that your style and design are unique.”
Cassie also shared with us about her mentor through this journey.
“ I have found some great mentors. The first person i’d like to thank is Suk, she is a pretty well known designer. At first when I was doing sketches of my ideas of this whole collection I went to her place asking for advice and she answered a lot of my questions.”
As we prepare for the Runway Cassie gives us a little insight as to her inspiration for this collection.
“The inspiration behind at first was a picture I clipped from a magazine. It is black and white picture of two japanese dancers and they have a long black dresses. That kind of gave me the inspiration of the empowered woman. It also had movement to it so in my collections it reflects a hi-low structure with movement and also my fabric is mainly leather so it kind of gives more of an armor look. I want the woman who wear my design to feel powerful.”
